Weaving. This is a craft that dates all the way back to the Neolithic times (about 12,000 years ago). Prior to the discovery of the actual weaving process, the fundamental principles of weaving were already applied to interlace twigs and branches used in the creation of shelters, fences, and baskets.

Weaving is being used in textile production. This process makes use of the interlocking of vertical (wraps) with the horizontal (weft) threads.

There are two ways that you can do weaving. First, and the original way, is to do it by hand. The other method is to use a machine (also known as loom).

The loom was born from the crude frame made of wood. This was soon transformed into the more sophisticated designs of weaving machines used with electricity. Weaving is now a mechanical process – at least most of the time. Hand weaving is more difficult, hence, it tends to be pricier.

Woven Fabrics

Basic weaving is alternately going up and down (and up and down again through a series of vertical threads) using a horizontal thread. This alternate process is repeated on the second horizontal thread and onto the next one and so forth.

The twill weave, on the other hand, is passing through two or more of the warp yarns creating a diagonal line in the process. A popular use of this weaving style is the so-called herringbone construction.

The third kind of weaving is the satin weave. This is what’s commonly seen on smooth surfaces.

Woven fabrics are best used in furnishings that you would want to appear crisp. These can offer a more luxurious yet pristine appearance. The downside to this is that it’s not as soft as knitted stuff. They are also not stretch, hence, they are difficult to adjust. Woven fabrics also get wrinkled easily.

Woven Furniture

The wicker making process consists of using natural or man-made materials such as rattan, cane, reed, willow, grasses, rush, splints and vinyl. These are woven to turn into the most beautiful furniture pieces that are often used in Hampton’s homes and many patios throughout the country.

Apart from wicker and rattan, furniture manufacturers have also been using resin and vinyl which are both synthetic materials.

Wicker furniture is considered as a wonderful remodeling, makeover or initial design element for homes. It is beneficial because it is lightweight. Wicker is quite easy to move around. Though it is lightweight, it can still support the weight of adults that come in different shapes and sizes.

Wicker is also durable which means you can use the furniture for a very long time. Those made with rattan, reed and bamboo all have sturdy qualities. Combine these with an aluminum frame to have a piece that will last longer.

Cane is made out of the peeled off rattan bark. The uniform strips are then used to weave seats as well as the backs of chairs. This material can also be used on the legs of tables and chairs.

Rattan is the most common wicker material that you will see. It is made from Calamus, a climbing palm. It is an abundant and renewable source of furniture material since it can grow as long as 36 inches each day.

Reed is that pithy interior of a rattan. This can be easily processed into various sizes and shapes such as wedge, flat, and round. Willow is common in the U.S. and Europe and is known to come from willow shrubs and trees.

Lastly, bamboo, a member of the grass family, is also used because of its beautiful yet inexpensive quality.

Wicker is generally classic and timeless. Choose from the following colors – white, black, olive green and tan. These shades welcome the addition of colorful or neutral cushions. Talk of stylish flexibility.
