Being able to create the perfect color flow is the very thing that can help you harmonize your home’s atmosphere. Did you ever experience walking into any home and then you suddenly feel that something is not quite right?

Colors in your surroundings can influence your perceptions and moods – and in the most powerful way. The placement of colors can either make you feel comfortable or uneasy. To achieve a sense of continuity or harmony inside your home it is crucial to have good color flow throughout. This means having a balanced color scheme that is seen as a seamless way of connecting one room to the next.

Veer away from merely painting your home with a bland white color. Interior paint can both be an engaging and an taxing activity – the difference lies in knowing how to create a link in the colors that you use. Repetition, fundamental color theory and accents can help you become an expert in color flow.

Color Flow Achieved

One of the easiest ways to create a color flow is by using the light and darker shades of the same color in different rooms inside your home. Think of how you would transition from the light color to the darker tone. Try using a fan deck to help you choose the right neighboring shades.

Continuity can also be achieved by choosing colors with similar undertones. Reds with blue undertones is a popular option. Try searching for other colors with a bluish undertone if you want to stick to this scheme.

You can also use your current furnishings as color inspiration. Choose any color from the artworks, fabrics or accessories then use them in splashes or hints throughout different rooms in your home.

If you have more than one favorite color, choose about three or five then try alternating the primary, secondary accent colors for every room. Use one color for the main wall on the living room, then have this same color be painted on the ceiling of the adjacent bedroom; and still on another bedroom, use this same color on accessories such as throw pillows, stencils, lampshades, or the window treatments.

As you move from room to room, make sure to use the same color in different shades, sticking to the two or three-color scheme.

If similar colors look boring to you, then you can also use the analogous color scheme. Analogous colors are those colors that lie next to one another on a color wheel. An example of this is to paint an entry hall green then the living room with a cheerful yellow. Take a peek into the dining room and you should see apricot-colored walls.

If you want colors that complement then you can also use those that sit opposite each other on the color wheel.

Novelty and Creativity

As you go from room to room, have an abundance of creativity and novelty. These days, the rave is all about colorful spaces. Gone are those days when furniture pieces were perfectly matched and where paint colors were the one-size-fits all type. Now, you can experiment on the look of your home for as long as you consider color coordination and cohesiveness.

There are many color coordinating methods nowadays. Use them to turn a disjointed space into a room that perfectly flows to the adjacent room. Make your home a canvas that you can fill with your artistic flair.

In all these rules about color coordination, blending and whatnot; just do not forget that what matters most is your personality. Remember that as you go about in choosing the colors, go for those that you really love and not just those that are currently hot or trendy.
