The elements of interior design are important considerations for any home styling project. These elements serve as guiding principles when planning the interiors of any home. Any decision made thereafter should be based upon these principles.

Element #1: Color

Color is known to set the mood in any room. The right play of colors can make the room look beautiful; feel warmer or cooler; or appear visually bigger or smaller.

Color has the power to reflect off certain surfaces and can even create an illusion of depth.

Colors that contrast can also be used to highlight focal points while matching colors can hide ugly features through correct blending.

Element #2: Texture

Tactile texture, simply explained, is how an object’s surface feels. Visual texture, on the other hand, is the way a material portrays roughness or smoothness. Texture is now slowly being recognized as an important element of interior design. Fabrics with heavy textures, for instance, can have a dramatic impact when used in a room.

This is one of the elements that get the last attention yet through it, the room can have a powerful dimension. This element can be used to break up a rather monochromatic room. Adding texture is like adding interest and depth. Use cushions, wallpaper, rugs or drapes to achieve the visual texture that you want.

Element #3: Form

Form is any object that comes in three dimensions because it has length, height, depth and width. There are two form types – geometric and natural. The former is made by man while the latter is organic by nature.

To create a form, it is necessary for lines to be joined. Probably the most popular shape in interior design is the rectangle. But other than this shape, any object that has an outline or shape has form.

It is important for you to achieve the best form by utilizing the right proportions and room scales.

Element #4: Line

Line is defined as the continuous movement on a surface. Next to color, it can easily set the mood or feeling inside a room. Edges of furniture pieces often create lines that form lovely shapes.

The use of horizontal lines can evoke an informal setting or serenity. Vertical lines can add height and balance. Curves in lines imply feminism while diagonal lines are effective in attracting attention.

Element #5: Space

This interior design element is the amount of area available for a certain purpose. This can either be two or three dimensional; two-dimensional meaning the floor and other such parts and three-dimensional when it includes the room’s height.

Space is literally the distance or area around the room. There are both positive and negative spaces. Positive space is any shape that symbolizes any subject matter while the negative is simply the open space that surrounds subjects.

Space may also be considered as the actual structure of the room or home. This is that work area for the interior designer. It is the fundamental structure or backbone which includes the floors, walls, doors, ceilings and windows. Even the beams and columns which are there for structural support are considered to be a part of space.

Element #6: Light

Lighting may be the least element that gets the attention of homeowners yet it is one of the most important.  Lighting, just like color, can set the mood or ambience of a room. It can also alter the way a color is perceived.

Lighting may either be artificial or natural. There are three types of artificial light which are –

  • Task lighting
  • Accent lighting
  • Mood lighting

These three can help create a certain feeling, style or mood depending on the room where it is being used in.

If you can successfully combine these elements of interior design, then you have achieved a great-looking room. Are you ready to experiment?
